Government pledges more financial aid for Syrian refugees

An extra €1.65m of Government funding has been announced to help more than eight million people affected by the Syrian crisis.

The Minister for Trade and Development Joe Costello says the funding will be given to Concern, Goal and Oxfam to provide humanitarian assistance to almost seven million people needing help inside Syria, and around 1.6 million more refugees that have left the country.

It will bring the Government's total support for the Syrian conflict to €10m.

Minister Costello said that the aid will provide blankets, temporary accommodation and food for families.

"At the present time, the situation really is one of the greatest tragedies in the world, where 93,000 people have been killed, where an enormous amount of people have been displaced," he said.
